 John enlisted in the US Army in JUL 1964 and was assigned to HOW BTRY 1st SQDN 11TH ARMD CAV REGT in Vietnam and served as a Field Artillery Cannon Fire Direction Specialist and intelligence assistant. John served honorably until his discharge in JUN 1967. During his service John was awarded several Decorations, including: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the good conduct Medal. John was well known to the Patriot Guard Riders in SWWA as the Commander of the Castle Rock American Legion Post #175, who rendered many Military Honors for our veterans during our missions.

John D. Petraitis, 73, of Castle Rock died April 8, 2016, at St. John Medical Center.

He was a devoted, loving, loyal and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend.

John was born July 27, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., to Irene (Gower) and John H. Petraitis. He also had a stepfather Tom Wood.

John moved to Washington more than 40 years ago and raised a family with the love of his life, Mary. He served in the Vietnam War in the 11th Calvary. John was in the Army from 1962 to 1967 and also did six years of Army Reserves. He received numerous medals and honors during his years of service. He also volunteered with the Cowlitz County Sheriff Reserves.

John worked at Reynolds Aluminum and Weyerhaeuser where he was a plant supervisor. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and traveling.

He was a dedicated veteran who participated in American Legion Post No. 175 in Castle Rock, VFW Post No. 10882, and volunteered at the Cowlitz County Veterans Center to help find resources for displaced veterans. He was a member of the Honor Guard and worked with the Patriot Guard Riders. He proudly helped give honorable funeral services to veterans.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Mary in 2013; and a sister, Kathleen Chapman in 2015.

He is survived by three daughters, Lisa Galewski (Jim), Katrina Hinesley (Ryan), and Tammy Petraitis; five siblings, Bob Petraitis, Mike Petraitis (Donna), Leslie Fox (Lee), Brad Wood (Jimmie), and Bruce Wood; six grandchildren, Amanda Valentine (Robert), Amber Ripp (Willy), Jordan Jenkins (Cody), Zack Galewski, Courtney Welty, and Angelina Russo; a great-grandson, Ethyn Jenkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service with full military honors is planned for 11 a.m. Sunday at Steele Chapel, 5050 Mount Solo Road, in Longview.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American legion Post No. 175, P.O. Box 175, Castle Rock, WA 98611.
